Zildjian has released two new entry-level cymbal lines, the I series and the return of Planet Z. The new Zildjian I series will replace the ZBT line, while a revamped Planet Z series has a new alloy and refreshed look.
The I series is made from B8 bronze with modern weights and profiles, as well as several effect sounds. “Cymbal trends are always changing, and as popular as ZBT has been since its debut in 1998, we realized that it wasn’t delivering everything today’s drummers were asking for,” says Andy Tamulynas, global category manager for Zildjian Cymbals, in a press release.
“With the development of the I family, we really started from the ground up and challenged what a B8 cymbal could be… The thinner weights, modern profiles ,and unique special effect options are really going to allow intermediate drummers to carve out their own voice in a way that just wasn’t possible before.”
The I series launches with a 10” splash, 14”, 16”, 17”, 18”, 19” crashes, 18” and 20” crash-rides, 20” and 22” rides, 13” and 14” hi-hats, 14” Mastersound hi-hats, a 14” trash crash/hi-hat top, a 17” trash crash, and 16” and 18” China cymbals. A variety of configurations of cymbals are offered in six cymbal packs.
The new Planet Z series is crafted from brass, making it “bright and cutting, with a more controlled and focused sound,” according to the company. “Brass is an ideal material for entry level cymbals because of its controlled sustain,” says Tamylynas. “The reduced wash makes it easy for the drummer to hear exactly what’s being played, so that they can learn more quickly.”
Planet Z cymbals are available in a 10” splash, 16” crash, 18” crash ride, 20” ride, 13” and 14” hi-hats, and an 18” China. A variety of configurations are offered in three cymbal packs.
