On this day in 1992, the indomitable heavy metal band, Black Sabbath, was honored with a star at the Rock Walk in Hollywood. The original lineup included guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, drummer Bill Ward, and singer Ozzy Osbourne.

Though Ward’s beefing with his fellow Sabbath members eventually led to their falling out, (later Sabbath drummers include Vinny Appice and Cozy Powell), Ward’s versatility and iconic swagger have earned him a solid place in the metal canon.

Influenced by big band greats Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Louie Bellson, Ward maintains a jazzy sensibility throughout his hard-hitting tom breaks and maverick snare-drills. Celebrate the Sabbath with some Sabbath and Ward’s memorable dances behind the kit, including the eponymous “Black Sabbath” (above.)
